Hawk's View
Hawk's View's View - Perfect!

There are few places more pleasant than the spacious great room at Hawk's View Golf Club. And, it was there that I spent a relaxing autumn afternoon talking with Kris Hills and learning a bit about the history of this unique establishment situated conveniently - and very peacefully, I might add - just north of Lake Geneva. Surrounded by stunning flower gardens and those rolling hills found only in Walworth County, there are not enough superlatives to express the unique ambience offered by Hawks View, whether you're a golfer, diner, or shopper.

As Food and Beverage Director, Kris has many talents; her many hats include party planner, supervisor and even, occasionally, fill-in bartender. Her extensive resume indicates experience in just about every aspect of the food and beverage, hospitality and customer service world. And, her experience shows, as Kris has been instrumental in adding a host of amenities to Hawk's View's ever-expanding menu of services. It was just this year that they began catering in-house, offering reception fare that is as innovative as it is delicious. This menu will please even the most discerning bride-to-be, as well as the golfer just in from the annual scramble/fundraiser.

It's the ambience, though, that sets Hawk's View apart. Rustic Elegance maybe? Spacious Allure? Sophisticated Charm? Business with healthy dose of casual for sure. Festivity with a certain chic. There's something uniquely appealing about the open-trussed ceiling with its log rafters. I was surprised to learn that they'd been painted bright red in the not-so-distant past, when Hawk's View was home to the Longhorn Saloon. There's certainly no sign of red paint anymore, as it's surrendered to a warm, golden natural-wood glow. (I was equally surprised when Kris reminded me that the hill over yonder had been the Mount Fuji ski hill. . . .now traversed not by skis, but club-bearing golfers vying against this five-star course.)

Hawk's View has become one of the most talked-about wedding venues in the area. . . and for good reason. Picture an open-air ceremony here on the Overlook Terrace, surrounded by family, friends, and panoramic views of the course and its professionally-designed gardens. Here I can't help but give credit. And in this case kudos go to the folks at Northwind Perennials, as they've created the perfect backdrop: flowers in continuous and abundant bloom, accompanied by an inviting path from which to enjoy them. Your Special Day made more memorable by a flawless scene.

Although weddings often take center stage, Hawk's View's meeting rooms are as flexible as they are inviting. Kris and her staff can transform these areas into almost any size and configuration imaginable. Smaller spaces are perfect for business meetings, accommodating groups of almost any size. Break time? Take a walk through the those tailored gardens and grab a dose of fresh air overlooking the 18th green. . . Hmm. It might be difficult to get back to business. And, why should you, when your clubs are in the trunk awaiting just such an emergency? Golf emergency. There's no better place to play hooky.

The interior at Hawk's View seems to be in a constant state of quiet change. A soaring fireplace now graces the central room, its rough-hewn style consistent with the natural, outdoor feel of this space. Comfy chairs, a crackling fire. . . Irresistible for a lively discussion of Sunday's big game after a round of autumn golf.

Of course, few things are more complementary to conversation than food! It's time to order up a quick half pound of Cajun Shrimp, Monterey-style to whet the appetite. A couple of pounds (yes, that's right!) of wings may suffice, too. Pass the Bleu Cheese, please, and order another round.

Something more substantial, perhaps? Ready for some serious refueling after that last 18? Never fear, Hawk's View's kitchen is open and ready for business - seven days a week, as a matter of fact. So, let's take a look at the offerings.

Who'd know Cajun better than Wisconsin's favorite football player and his namesake the Brett Favre Cajun Burger is right for the job. Topped with pepper jack cheese and real chipotle mayo, this one's sure to add a little spice to your life. Not quite so spicy, but filled with rich flavor is Palmer's Pulled Pork Sandwich . . . barbecued, pulled, piled on an onion roll. . . nothing better. If you're ready for something deliciously different, by all means ask for the grilled Panini, chicken layered with Swiss and Dijon, nestled between slices of marbled rye and grilled. Panini lovers' heaven. Of course, Panini's cousin, Reuben is here, too, piled high with corned beef and don't forget the kraut.

In response to those low-carbers, this menu features a couple of wraps, the contents of which defy the heights of delicious. Choose chicken, beef or ham bundled snugly into a fresh tortilla blanket. Trevino's Tex-Mex is not to be missed either, stuffed with Cajun Chicken with all your favorites. . .including surprise ingredient, red beans. Not to be missed.

But for the true connoisseur of all things hearty the Boom Boom Bomber is your best bet. Authentic Italian Beef, mozzarella, roasted peppers and, as only true Italians know, the indispensable jardinière.

Whether you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime event, a family gathering, a business rap session or just a relaxing weekday lunch, Hawk's View Golf Club will become your first choice. You'll find Hawk's View just off of Hwy. 120 on Krueger Road just a stone's skip north of Lake Geneva. Bring good friends, as you'll want to spend some time here.
